Portland Muslim leader invited to attend State of the Union Address

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A local Muslim leader will be heading to our nation’s capital for the State of the Union Address next week.

Salma Ahmad is the president of the Islamic Society of Greater Portland, and Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici invited Ahmad to be her guest at the event.

Ahmad shared with Fox 12 why her work is so important.

“Increased Islamic-phobia for some reason is always there when the election comes, I mean this is just an every year thing,” said Ahmad. “But it is a challenge for us and we have to keep working to tell the American people that the religion Islam is a peaceful religion like any religion.”

President Obama’s final State of the Union Address will take place Tuesday night.
