PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A Portland alternative school is in danger of closing, but a rally Saturday may have prevented that from happening.

The Metropolitan Learning Center is a K-12 alternative school in northwest Portland, and it was in danger of being shut down to make room for overcrowding at nearby Chapman Elementary School.

An estimated 200 students and staff gathered at the rally Saturday.

A new recommendation advises against closing the school, but parents are still concerned.

"While I'm relieved to hear that it is recommended that MLC not be closed, I am still anxious about what is going to happen, how Portland Public Schools will solve this real problem of overcrowding in northwest Portland," said Elise Eden, parent of MLC student.

A final solution to the overcrowding problem has not been agreed upon yet.

A decision is expected to be presented to the Portland Public School Superintendent by February.
