An armed suspect was arrested after running from police and fighting with officers in southeast Portland early Sunday morning, according to Portland Police.

Officers first responded to the area of southeast 143rd Avenue and Stephens Street just before 4 a.m. to investigate the report of possible burglars in the area.

Police said officers came across a white 1993 Dodge pickup-truck in the intersection, and two men and one woman loading and unloading items from the truck.

According to Portland Police, officers were talking to the three people and got their ID information as part of the investigation.

As one officer was checking names in the police car, the other officer began checking for weapons.

Police said after checking the driver of the pick-up, a 62-year-old male, the officer approached the second male, Joshua Lee Crocker, 35.

Crocker then ran away, but was quickly caught by the officer, according to police.

According to the release, Crocker turned and swung at the officer, and the two got into a struggle. A second officer then came to assist.

Police said one officer found that Crocker was clenching a handgun between his thighs, so the officer grabbed the gun and threw it away as they continued to try to get Crocker into custody.

Pepper spray was used at one point, but had little effect according to police.

Police said a sergeant arrived to help get Crocker into custody, but he remained combative.

Once Crocker was in custody, officers discovered that he was wearing a camouflaged tactical vest under his jacket, which contained a large dagger knife, according to the release.

Officers were concerned that Crocker was high on some kind of stimulant, and had visible injuries, so he was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Both officers were driven to a local hospital as a precaution, and were released.

Crocker was released from the hospital, and faces multiple charges including felon in possession of a firearm, two counts of assaulting a police officer, and resisting arrest. He will be arraigned on Monday.

Police said the female suspect, Nicole Marie Williams, 36, was booked on outstanding warrants for child neglect, and manufacturing/delivery of a controlled substance.

According to police, the driver was cooperative with officers and released from the scene.
