TIGARD, OR (KPTV) -

A student was hit by a dump truck in front of Tigard High School on Monday.

Emergency crews responded to the school at 3:30 p.m.

Firefighters said the teen was thrown 10 to 15 feet after the collision, but he was conscious and breathing when he was taken to the hospital. He remained in the hospital Tuesday.

Investigators said the student stepped off the sidewalk and into the path of the truck heading west on Durham Road. Police said it wasn't clear why the student walked onto the roadway.

Police said the driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. Officers determined the driver was not at fault and no citations were issued.

Still, some students said it can be a dangerous area for pedestrians.

"You’ve got to look over your shoulder, you don't know if they are going to stop or not,” sophomore Josh Reynolds said. “And then some people, if you press the button to walk across over there, they don't even stop. So there have been a few times I’ve almost been hit trying to walk over there.”

Durham Road was closed in the area, but it had reopened by 4:30 p.m.
