Molalla school leaders investigating "white power" Instagram account

Posted: Updated:

Molalla school district leaders are trying to figure out who’s behind a racist Instagram account that shows pictures of real high school students. FOX 12 received a tip about the story from a woman with two mixed race children in the district and she’s concerned about their safety.

The name on the Instagram account is “whitepower_molalla.” One post shows a photo of the all-white cheerleading squad and praises the “Aryan woman’s” beauty. Another has a photo of a mixed race couple going to a homecoming dance together and calls them traitors.

Superintendent Tony Mann is disgusted by the account and sent FOX 12 the following statement:

“All students are entitled to attend school free from the kind of hostility that is created by this type of social media.  We are investigating this matter; however, we have no knowledge of a student being responsible.  School must to be a good place for all students.  In the Molalla River School District, ALL means ALL.”

Jessica Noe has heard some offensive comments at school, but she doesn’t think they’re evidence of a serious problem.

“Every now and then you get that racist comment, but I don’t think there’s racism in our school," said Noe.

Libby Byrne is a sophomore at Molalla High and she has a different perspective. Byrne is Asian and says she has been the target of racism.

“Yeah, I’ve been bullied because of my race before,” said Byrne. “Someone happened to say ‘Go back to where you came from!’ So that was upsetting.”

Since FOX 12 started looking into this issue, the Instagram account in question has been taken down. However, Superintendent Mann says he’s still investigating it. Byrne is relieved to hear that.

“Yeah, it’s nice to see that our school is trying to stop this," said Byrne.
