Two men accused of street racing leading to crash that injured woman in Gresham

Posted: Updated:

Two young men are facing multiple charges after a street racing crash sent a woman to the hospital.

36-year-old Tonya Chamberlain is still in a Gresham hospital with serious injuries and her family wants the drivers that hit her to know exactly what they've done.

Police said late Thursday night on NE 172nd and Halsey, Rostislav Zhuchenya, 19, and Dmitriy Zabolotnyy, 18, were racing down Halsey, going 30 to 40 miles over the speed limit, when Tonya was pulling out of a convenience store parking lot.

Tonya's family said she looked both ways and didn't see or hear anything and then all of a sudden, one of the cars hit her.

The impact was so severe that it sent part of Tonya's engine flying through the window of a nearby salon and took a huge chuck out of a wall.

Tonya suffered numerous injuries including a collapsed lung, a concussion, shattered shoulder and a broken arm. She is a single mom and the sole bread winner for her family, and her relatives can't believe these men would be so reckless.

"How how stupid, you've just ruined somebody's life. These two young kids hurt a family," said Tonya's sister Christina Romero.

Zhuchenya had his first court appearance last Friday. He has been charged with reckless driving, criminal mischief in the second degree, recklessly endangering another person and assault in the third degree.

Zabolotnyy is still in the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, but was cited there on charges of assault in the third degree, reckless driving, reckless endangering another person, criminal mischief in the second degree, speed racing, and careless driving.
