PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A Portland State University student is accused of critically injuring a man in a hit-and-run crash.

Police said 20-year-old Suliman Algwaiz was drunk when he hit someone walking near the PSU campus early Sunday morning, and according to court documents he told police "as far as the crash, that was me."

Algwaiz made his first appearance in court on Monday afternoon.

He is facing DUII, assault in the second degree, assault in the third degree, failure to perform duties of a driver to injured person, vehicular assault of a pedestrian, two counts of reckless driving, recklessly endangering another person, and failure to perform duties of a driver when property is damaged.

An attorney entered a not guilty plea for Algwaiz.

Algwaiz is accused of crashing into a man walking near SW 11th and Market Street, then driving away, just before 6 a.m. Police found him and his car a few blocks away.

One witness told FOX 12 he looked out the window after hearing the crash, then saw a 2015 Mustang speed away, driving the wrong way down Market Street.

"I mean, it was shocking to see someone hit someone and then run away. That's the part that seems really sad about it," said Jamal Fike.

Court documents say police suspect Algwaiz's Mustang was involved in a separate crash about four hours before the hit-and-run.

In that case, the driver of a gray Mustang reversed onto the sidewalk and crashed into a bench outside the Marathon Taverna in NW Portland.

People were on the bench, but they were able to get away before impact.
