On the Go with Joe: Celebrating Russian Old New Year

Posted: Updated:

This weekend is the 10th Annual Russian Old New Year Ball from local Russian band Chervona.

The event will be held at the Star Theater on Saturday, January 16.

The Russian Orthodox Church for years used the Julian calendar, and according to it the new year starts on what is January 14 on the western Gregorian calendar.

The holiday is now celebrated as "Old New Year" by Russians, who have New Year’s trees where "Ded Moroz," a type of Russian Santa, leaves presents. Other Old New Year’s customs include eating caviar and bilinis, singing of carols and the telling of fortunes.

If you want to join in on the fun this weekend in Portland, tickets are still available on the band’s website, Chervona.com, or on the band’s Facebook page.
