PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The Portland Timbers acquired defender Zarek Valentin from the Montreal Impact and signed free agent midfielder Ned Grabavoy, the club announced Tuesday.

Grabavoy is Portland's first-ever free agent signing in MLS.

Grabavoy, 32, has made 279 league appearances – 220 starts – during a 12-year MLS career and most recently registered two goals and three assists in 26 games for New York City FC in their inaugural season in 2015.

Grabavoy has been on two MLS Cup championship teams, Real Salt Lake in 2009 and the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2005.

Valentin was acquired from Montreal in exchange for an international roster slot for the 2016 season.

Valentin, 24, made 55 league appearances with Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt across parts of three seasons from 2013-15, helping the side gain promotion to the Tippeligaen following the 2013 season.

Originally loaned to Bodø/Glimt by the Impact in March 2013, Valentin joined the Norwegian club permanently ahead of the 2014 Tippeligaen season and helped the side remain in the top flight for back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2008-09.

Per league and club policy, terms of the transactions were not disclosed.
