GRESHAM, OR (KPTV) -

The Gresham Police Department is crediting a rapid response by patrol officers in apprehending the suspect in a Wednesday bank robbery as soon as she walked out of the building.

Officers arrested Melissa Yvonne Wheatt, 44, of Gresham without incident within moments of her walking out of the Bank of America on East Powell Boulevard.

Police received a call from inside the bank claiming that a woman matching the description of Wheatt had given a note to a teller demanding money.

One minute later at 10:42 a.m. the first office was on the scene.

After other officers arrived, the police waited for Wheatt to leave the bank for making the arrest.

"We're just thankful no one was hurt," said Detective Dan Marciano, "The bank's employees, the patrons, and the responding officers did a great job."

Wheatt is being held in the Multnomah County Detention Center, and is expected to be arraigned Thursday.
