Salem brewery holds release party for 'The Terry Porter' ale

An iconic Trail Blazers player now has a specialty beer that was created in his honor and in support of a Portland children's hospital.

Gilgamesh Brewing in Salem had a beer release party on Wednesday for "The Terry Porter" ale.

While some athletes are on boxes of Wheaties, Blazer ambassador Terry Porter is on a bottle of beer.

So, how does a The Terry Porter taste?

"Tastes good. It's tall, it's dark, it's beautiful, handsome," said Terry Porter.

The Terry Porter is a dark and malty, American style Porter ale.

"I have to say with my limited skills it has some chocolate in it, kind of a dark roast. It's a little sweet, not too sweet where you can't enjoy it," said Porter.

The Trail Blazers legend even helped out with the brewing process.

"It's great to have a childhood hero like that come in and work with you and know that, oh my gosh, my hero is here making a beer with me and the rest of my family. It's just amazing," said Michael Radtke, Gilgamesh Brewing.

Like Terry himself, the Porter and the cause is the real deal. For every 22 oz bottle of The Terry Porter sold, Gilgamesh and Columbia Distributing will donate $2 dollars to the Doernbecher Children's Hospital Foundation. $40 bucks per half-keg.

"At the end of the day it is all about the kids. It's about having the luxury of trying to build a guest house and try to help the families with the kids diagnosed with this unbelievable diseases that they have somewhere to go as a family and not worry about the burden about trying to figure out some other type of lodging and for that lodging to be provided for them," said Porter.

Porter is currently serving as a board member of the Doernbecher's foundation. He said it drives him to help find housing for families whose loved ones are being cared for at OHSU.

"When you talk about the trifecta, home run, to be able to do it in this community, to be able to do it for the cause that is very important and a local brewery, kind of a local celebrity. Kind of a local celebrity," said Porter.

The Terry Porter bottles will be featured now thru April at New Seasons, Roth's, Gilgamesh, select bars around the state and of course Terry's fridge.

"The house is stacked with Terry Porter, so why wouldn't the refrigerator be stacked?"
