LINN COUNTY, OR (KPTV) -

The White House has designated Linn County as a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area.

Michael Botticelli, director of national drug control policy, announced 14 additional counties in 10 states would be added to the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area program.

Linn County joins other Oregon counties including Douglas, Lane, Marion, Clackamas, Washington and Multnomah as being designated High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas.

The designation will allow Linn County to receive federal resources for drug control efforts.

The program was created in 1988 and coordinates drug enforcement efforts among federal, state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies in areas determined to be critical drug trafficking regions.

The goal is to design specific initiatives to decrease the production, transportation, distribution and chronic use of drugs, as well as money laundering.

More than 17 percent of all counties in the U.S., totaling more than 60 percent of the U.S. population, are designated as High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas.
