Failed trip to a butcher shop ends with neighbors sharing Powerball prize

SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

After two neighbors were unsuccessful in trying out a new butchers shop, they tried their luck with a Powerball ticket from a nearby shop, and now they have 50,000 reasons to be glad they made two stops.

Friends and neighbors Barbara Healey and Erica Johnson, both of Portland, and Johnson’s mother-in-law Shawna, who was visiting from Utah, bought a $10 quick pick ticket at their second stop, Uncle John’s Market.

"We had no idea what we were doing, but the prize was so big we had to give it a try," Healey said.

When they checked the ticket, they couldn't believe it. They were among the 250,000 Oregon winners, matching four numbers and the Powerball to get a $50,000 prize.

"My family had planned a trip to Disneyland, now we are going to go all out," Erica Johnson said. "This is so much fun!"

Her mother-in-law was also excited for traveling, and thinks her over-sized prize check will turn heads on her flight home.

"I'm going to be the most popular person on the plane," she said.
