Video shows man shoplifting from hardware store while child watches

Posted: Updated:

A suspected shoplifter stole hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise from a local hardware store, all with his young son watching.

The incident happened Tuesday night at the new Broadway ACE Hardware store in northeast Portland.

The store had just that day re-opened, after months of renovations.

Just before closing Tuesday night, general manager David Warren said a couple and a child who the staff assume was their son came into the store and started shopping.

They seemed to be taking a long time, so the employees kept an eye on their surveillance cameras.

Warren said the video from the cameras shows the man pick up a box cutter and cut the security bands off of a distance leveler worth about $130 dollars then put it under his shirt.

Warren also said the footage shows the man and woman taking other items around the store, all with that little boy watching their every move.

Warren said the theft was a very disappointing end to an otherwise great re-opening.

“Things were going great and then towards the end of the day, this kind of soured it,” he said. “And then again, just to see a kid involved with that, it’s just really sad, honestly. Just to think this is kind of how he’s growing up and where’s he going to end up in ten years, you know.”

Warren said the couple stole about $400 worth of merchandise in total.

Anyone who recognizes the people in the video or knows anything about the incident is asked to call the Portland Police Bureau.
