MOSES LAKE, WA (KPTV) -

A 31-year-old Portland woman sleeping in the back of a Jeep was killed in a crash near Moses Lake, Washington.

Emergency crews responded to the intersection of Road 2 Southeast and Road O Southeast on Thursday afternoon.

Investigators said Tyler Cowdry, 35, of Portland, was driving a 1995 Jeep Cherokee south on Road O when he failed to see a stop sign.

As he drove through the intersection, his vehicle was hit by a westbound 1992 Dodge Dakota driven by Dillan Leslie of Moses Lake.

A passenger in the Jeep was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The 31-year-old woman was identified Friday as Lauren Schatz of Portland.

Deputies said she was sleeping and not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Cowdry was flown to a hospital in Richland for treatment of serious injuries. He was in stable condition in the intensive care unit on Friday.

Leslie was taken to the hospital by ambulance and treated for minor injuries.

Investigators said Cowdry and Leslie were both wearing seatbelts.

The crash remains under investigation.

There was a 4-year-old brindle pit bull named Jenny riding in the front seat of the Jeep at the time of the crash. The dog ran from the scene and has not been found. Anyone who sees the dog is asked to contact police dispatchers at 509-762-1160.
