SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

Heroes with Heart, a new program by the Mid-Willamette Valley Habitat for Humanity has chosen their first family to build a home for in southeast Salem, and construction will begin this week.

The new program focuses on building homes for veterans, active military, and surviving spouses.

Veterans and other volunteers will be doing most of the construction, according to Habitat for Humanity.

Scott Gagnon, the Resource Development Director saw a need and began to reach out to veterans last year to get the program started.

"I really expected it to take longer to get the program started, but we've had an overwhelming response from veteran community and are ready to break ground," said Gagnon.

"Habitat for Humanity homes are built almost exclusively by volunteers and financed through grants and donations," said Dave Connell, Construction Manager. "We work mostly Saturdays and Wednesday evenings. No experience is required."

The Mid-Willamette Valley Habitat for Humanity received a grant in December specifically for the veteran’s home build which will cover half the cost of the home.
