Couple accused of shoplifting with 6-year-old son speaks out

VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

A Vancouver couple is speaking out after employees at a Portland hardware store accused them of shoplifting.

On Thursday, General Manager Dan Warren at Broadway ACE Hardware shared surveillance video with FOX 12 from their opening day on Tuesday.

In it, you see a couple come in with their young son and the man uses a box cutter to cut a $130 item off of a secure rack. Warren claims the man stuffed it under his shirt and stole other merchandise as well – all with his 6-year-old son watching.

But right after the story aired, Samantha Burnett called FOX 12, saying that was her family in the video. She says she and her husband did go shopping at the store on Tuesday, but she claims they did not steal anything.

Burnett says the surveillance video doesn’t show her husband walking down another store aisle with the item in his hand and then he eventually puts it back.

Burnett says the accusations are untrue and unfair.

“I mean, our son knows right from wrong. He would’ve absolutely been like 'why are you doing that?' And so for them to make a big deal of us doing this in front of our son, not to mention the phone calls we got. My grammy’s sick with cancer. I mean, she’s calling. It’s not OK what they’ve done.”

Warren says Burnett called the store and threatened to sue for defamation, but he is still pursuing the case.

Portland Police say they know who the couple is and they are investigating.
