The Portland Thorns had the first pick in Friday’s National Women's Soccer League college draft and they went with a star from Virginia.
Emily Sonnett is a defender currently in training camp with the U.S. Women's National Team
She was a first-team All-American and Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year at the University of Virginia.
Sonnett said she is thrilled to be in the Rose City along with fellow World Cup national team stars.
"Emily is a special talent and a fantastic person off the field," Thorns FC coach Mark Parsons said in a release. "I've had the opportunity to watch her throughout her college career and she is extremely intelligent and technically gifted with the focus, drive and a skill set that will help her become a top professional in this league."
The Thorns also drafted defender McKenzie Berryhill from Arizona State University in the third round Friday with the No. 21 overall pick.
While the Thorns don't begin training camp until March, the MLS Cup champion Portland Timbers will hold their first practice for the 2016 season a week from Saturday.
