COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE, OR (KPTV) -

Two friends from Salem only planned on a two mile hike near Multnomah Falls, but when they decided to go a little father, the weather and darkness got them in big trouble.

Tyler Kondash and Hope Placencio, both 20, set out on the Wahkeena Falls Trailhead near Multnomah Falls on Thursday afternoon.

About two miles in, they decided to extend their hike to Devil's Rest. But once they got up there, snow covered up the trail and they lost their way.

Kondash and Placencio tried for a while to find a way out but after it turned dark, they decided to call for help.

Kondash was able to get cell service for a moment, so he called police and then they waited for several hours for search and rescue crews to arrive.

They had a little bit of food and water, but they were not prepared to stay over night.

The hikers ended up burning some socks and extra pants to keep warm, and Kondash said it was tough to stay positive.

"It seem like we were both kind of losing hope that we were going to be safe that night and didn't really think that we would be rescued. Anything can happen and you're not going to be prepared for everything, but whatever you can do for yourself and anyone you're with. Always be prepared to have more stuff than you think you need," said Kondash.

Rescuers finally found the pair at 2 a.m. and led them out.

Kondash and Placencio were cold and wet, but otherwise OK.
