Peace Temporary Emergency Shelter for men at capacity on opening night

Posted: Updated:

The Peace Temporary Emergency Shelter for men is now officially open to those in need.  This comes a matter of weeks after the building’s owners announced they wanted to donate their vacant space to help the city’s homeless.

Staff says the temporary shelter on 4th and Washington was officially at capacity on opening night. That means some 100 men took refuge on the second floor of the building.

“This is my first round with homelessness,” said guest David Powell. “Them opening up this place, it’s a great blessing to be honest with you.”

The group of men say they were beyond happy when they heard about the Menashe family virtually donating the second floor of their building to the city, so that they could have a place to sleep this winter.

“It’s going to get more people off of the street that need to stay somewhere because the weather is bad, and it’s cold and everything,” said guest Nicholas.

Organizers say there’s two sleeping rooms for the group of men with space for about 50 people in room.  Those rooms will be equipped with mats and blankets and there’s also a place for coffee, tea, books and board games.

“I’ll stay here quite a while, it has an impact on me and the other fellas quite a bit, quite a bit,” said Tony Scarino.

The temporary shelter will be funded by the city and run by Transition Projects, who says six staffers will stay overnight to monitor the group.  To avoid long lines outside of the building every day, staff says anyone who wants to stay at the shelter has to sign up ahead of time. Once someone reserves a space, it’s theirs, until they don’t return for it.

“This is great, this is what they need here in Portland, more places for people,” said Nicholas.

The shelter is open from 7 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. every night, at least for the next three months.

You can reserve a space by calling 503-280-4700 or coming to the Day Center at 650 NW Irving Street in Portland.
