'Whiteness History Month' program starting at PCC in April creates controversy online

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A new program coming to Portland Community College later this year is creating a lot of controversy online. It's called "Whiteness History Month."

Some people online are calling it "white shaming," but PCC says it is a project they hope will examine some of the issues around racism in society.

Leaders say the district-wide project will "examine race and racism through an exploration of the construction of whiteness, its origins and heritage," and added that "it is not a celebratory endeavor."

PCC hopes the project will try to inspire practical solutions to community issues and social problems that stem from racism.

Whiteness History Month will begin in April.
