TROUTDALE, OR (KPTV) -

Gresham firefighters responded to an early morning fire at a tavern in Troutdale that reportedly destroyed much of the inside of the building.

Firefighters arrived at Brass Rail Tavern on E Historic Columbia River Hwy. around 3:15 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Officials said they saw thick smoke coming out of the building but no flames were visible.

Firefighters said the thick smoke made it difficult to find the fire in the back of the building near the kitchen. The fire had also spread into the attic and basement.

Owner Cindy Roemer said the building is historical and has been there since the early 1900's.

She said she is shocked at the news and is unsure what to do next.

"I don't really know how I'm doing right now," Roemer said. "I just know I've got to get a hold of my staff and deal with them."

The fire is reportedly out and officials said there were no injuries.

Officials had originally closed Historic Columbia River Highway in both directions. The road was opened again around 6:30 a.m.

There is no word yet on the cause of the fire.
