TROUTDALE, OR (KPTV) -

A tree came down on a car on the Historic Columbia River Highway near the Stark Street Bridge trapping a woman in the car.

Emergency crews were at the scene shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Deputies said the driver had just turned south onto the highway from the bridge in Troutdale when the tree fell across the center of her car, crushing the top of it.

Firefighters managed to rescue her from the car and the woman was taken to the hospital. She was believed to be conscious and alert at the scene.

Family members identified her as Judy Loftstedt, 65.  She was listed in fair condition at Emanuel Hospital Tuesday evening.

Her father, Dean Gray, told Fox 12 he first learned of the crash in a phone call from his son.

"He said she’s okay, nothing wrong, just that a tree fell on her," Gray said, adding that she might have a broken wrist but is otherwise okay.  "She’s extremely lucky.  From what I hear, that’s quite a fall.”

Gray believed Loftstedt was leaving work and heading to his home in Gresham when the tree fell.  The car she was driving belongs to her parents.

"I guess the tree came right down... and just smashed all four doors," Gray added.

The downed tree and car were blocking the highway, so traffic was closed just south of the Stark Street Bridge. Deputies were at the scene conducting traffic control.

The highway reopened just after 7 p.m.
