KEIZER, OR (KPTV) -

Keizer Police seized 77 pounds of marijuana during a traffic stop Monday afternoon.

Police said around 1:09 a.m., an officer saw a U-Haul rental van traveling eastbound on Lockhaven Drive NE from River Road North and estimated it was traveling 50 miles per hour in a 35 mile per hour zone.

The officer stopped the vehicle. The vehicle was occupied only by the driver, David Lester Nicholson, 39 from Keizer.

KPD said during the initial encounter with Nicholson, the officer "smelled an overwhelming odor of marijuana" coming from the vehicle.

Nicholson told the officer he had over a pound of marijuana inside the vehicle. Further investigation revealed Nicholson had six large plastic bags full of marijuana.

KPD said Nicholson gave signed consent to officers to search inside the U-Haul van.

During the search officers found a loaded semi-automatic .32 caliber handgun that was concealed in the cab of the vehicle.

Nicholson told the officer he is a grower for the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program (OMMP) and provided his ID card. Nicholson also stated he was taking the marijuana to a location for extraction and processing.

Officers arrested Nicholson for unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of marijuana. He was taken to the Marion County Correctional Facility.
