Hundreds pack Wilson High School to voice concerns about proposed redistricting plan

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds packed the Wilson High School cafeteria Tuesday night to raise concerns about a proposed redistricting plan set to impact thousands of students on Portland’s west side.

The principal at Wilson High said Tuesday night was likely the most full he’s ever seen their cafeteria.

Hundreds of passionate parents filled every corner of the room to share their thoughts about the proposed plan, hoping it in some way impacts the district’s final decision.

A group of about 100 people representing Rieke Elementary School marched their way through the rain and into Wilson High, to represent their school, while chanting “we walk for Rieke.”

“There’s a boundary change and if we don’t stop it, several families will have to change schools and we don’t want that,” said 4th grader Sam Frewing.

The proposed redistricting plan would move thousands of kids south to relieve overcrowding at Chapman, Capitol Hill and Hayhurst elementary schools along with Lincoln High School.

“The most recent proposal would fracture the Ainsworth community and also break up the crown jewel of PPS, the duel immersion program that’s been around for 30 years,” said one concerned parent.

Tuesday’s night's meeting was no official hearing, rather a chance for parents to express their feelings freely to the leaders of the District-wide Boundary Review Advisory Committee, (DBRAC.)

DBRAC has been working on the proposed plan for more than a year, according to the district, and will form their final plan in a matter of weeks.

The district says they understand people have their concerns and raise many valid points, but no matter how they look at it, they’re faced with difficult decisions that won’t make everyone happy.

After the DBRAC finalizes their plan, the district says they will hand it over to the Superintendent who will then turn the plan over to the school board for a final vote in the Spring.

According to PPS, the DBRAC has scheduled another meeting for Wednesday night at 5:45 p.m. at 501 N. Dixon St.
