EUGENE, OR (AP) -

Fourteen Oregonians are suing Volkswagen Group of America for allegedly selling them diesel vehicles equipped with a device that evades clean-air laws.

The Register-Guard reports that 14 people, including nine Lane County residents, filed the $301,900 civil lawsuit in Lane County Circuit Court Monday afternoon. It comes two weeks after the federal government sued the German automaker for as much as $46 billion under the Clean Air Act.

The Lane County case alleges that Volkswagen not only violated the clean air act but also defrauded its customers. It says the company intentionally sold cars with software that can detect when the vehicles are undergoing testing and change emissions controls.

The plaintiffs say they would not have bought their vehicles if they had known about the software.
