Barefoot kids evacuate Vancouver daycare fire

Posted: Updated:

A fire started on a roof of a Vancouver daycare Wednesday evening, forcing some kids to evacuate in their bare feet.

It happened at Kidspace in Northeast Vancouver as students and teachers were getting ready to wrap up the day.

Eight year old Skyler and his friends were playing dodgeball in the gym just before 4:00 p.m. when the alarms went off.

“The fire trucks started to show up so we knew that a fire was happening,” said Skyler.

Many of the kids were barefoot and had to walk out of the building on the cold ground without their shoes.

A daycare spokesperson said roofers were on the building working on a drain and it started smoking. Workers let teachers know right away and they pulled the alarm, evacuating the ten staff and 58 kids.

“A bunch of my friends were all scared because they left their stuff,” Skyler said.

Smoke poured from the upper vents. The fire caused major damage to the crawl space and attic. As firefighters worked on the building, the kids watched, worried about their things still inside.

“One of them started to cry because they left their favorite stuffed animal and Minecraft figures in it and they thought the roof was going to collapse on our stuff,” Skyler said.

The kids went to nearby buildings until their parents could pick them up.

Now, parents will have to come up with a new plan for the rest of the week, until the daycare can assess the damage.

“They said the school is going to be closed for a few days, but I’m just glad everybody is okay,” parent Nadav Meshoulam said.
