PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A man claiming to have a pipe bomb stole money, beer and ice cream from a Plaid Pantry store in southeast Portland.

Police said the suspect, identified as 52-year-old Theodore Clifton Compton, threatened to blow up the store on the 4500 block of Southeast 122nd Avenue at 11:24 p.m. Wednesday.

A store employee said the man had an item that looked like it could be a pipe bomb.

Officers checking the neighborhood spotted Compton hiding in some bushes along Southeast Holgate Boulevard near 116th Avenue.

The officers then located a metal dumbbell bar, which they believe Compton used as the hoax pipe bomb.

Compton was arrested and booked in the Multnomah County Jail on charges of robbery and second-degree possession of a hoax destructive device.
