Benson student's social media push may have helped get leaky roof fixed

Posted: Updated:

A Benson High School student is celebrating a small victory now that the leaky roof she complained about on social media is finally getting fixed.
Cynthia Aguilar is a senior at Benson and the student body president. She said the leaky roof in the school’s E-wing has been a problem for a while.

During the heavy rains last month, she said it got so bad that the hallway was blocked with garbage cans to catch the water and the floor was constantly wet.

Aguilar posted pictures of the mess on Facebook and her friends shared them more than 700 times. She said former Benson students, parents and staff responded, saying that leak has been a problem for years.

This week, workers are fixing the leak. District leaders told FOX 12 the Benson High principal reported the issue on Jan. 11 and crews arrived to assess the problem Thursday.

Aguilar said it’s a safety issue and she believes the voices of her and her friends made a difference.
“Benson isn’t anyone’s neighborhood school and Benson, you know, doesn’t belong in a certain neighborhood. We’re so different from everyone else and it’s easy to feel alone sometimes. But you know, after all the sharing and comments and positive feedback, you realize that you’re not alone and I think that’s the best part of all,” she said.
The Benson High School building is 99 years old and it’s just one of many schools in the district hoping to be rebuilt in the coming years. Because of that, district leaders said they don’t want to pour too much money into temporary fixes when the entire building needs to be replaced.

The leak is coming from a coil in the ventilation system and workers will be fixing it Saturday.
