NEWPORT, OR (KPTV) -

It’s safe to say that Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jeremy Gautney was shocked to find a 2-year-old boy running down Highway 101 near Newport Saturday night.

The toddler had apparently slipped away from his parents at a family gathering close by and wandered onto the road around 9 p.m.

Deputy Gautney said in a phone interview that he thought the figure running on the road was an animal, but after a closer look he realized it was child.

“He was running on the yellow line there. At that point I knew I had to stop and get the kid out of the road,” he said.

Gautney said he proceeded to turn on his lights. He thinks the flashing lights caused the boy to run straight towards the patrol car.

Amazingly enough, Gautney said the boy did not seem the least bit scared.

“He was just mesmerized by the flashing lights from my vehicle, said Gautney. “And I picked him up and he was happy. Not a care in the world it seemed like.”

The deputy said the boy’s family arrived just moments later.

The sheriff’s office said this was not a case of negligence.

Thankfully the outcome of this situation was good.
