SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

Oregon Governor Kate Brown announced Friday the name of Oregon’s first State Resilience Officer.

Derek Smith will be responsible for coordinating seismic safety efforts across Oregon, according to the governor’s office.

The position was created to direct, coordinate and oversee seismic safety and resilience planning and preparation by state agencies and communities.

Governor Brown praised Smith’s previous efforts and achievements in this field.

“Throughout Derek's career he has successfully led initiatives addressing sustainability and resilience, even when it hasn't been done before," she said.

Smith was most recently CEO of Clean Energy Works where he led projects that helped provide residential energy efficiency retrofits.

Smith also worked as a policy adviser at the Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability.

Experts say the Pacific Northwest is at risk of a major earthquake due to the offshore Cascadia Subduction Zone, and state, federal and military officials have been working together to draft plans for such a scenario.
