PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Police have released surveillance images of three men described as "persons of interest" in the attack on a Packers fan outside a northwest Portland bar following an NFL playoff game.

Sam Whitehorn, 26, was found unconscious at 11:30 p.m. Saturday on Northwest 21st Avenue near Muu Muu's.

Witnesses told police Whitehorn was involved in an argument with the three men. One man punched Whitehorn once or twice, according to investigators, causing him to fall and hit his head.

Whitehorn suffered a traumatic brain injury and part of his skull was removed during emergency surgery. He remains in the hospital.

Witnesses told Whitehorn's family that the suspects approached him because he was wearing a Green Bay Packers beanie and the Packers had lost their playoff game earlier that evening.

Family members said Whitehorn, an English major at Portland State University who works as a bartender to pay for school, is not a violent person.

The assault suspect is described as a white or Hispanic man in his 30s, 5'11" with a thin build who is clean cut. He was wearing a black jacket and unknown-colored pants.

Detectives released surveillance images of three people of interest in this investigation Friday. They have not been identified by police as suspects at this time.

Police are asking for the public's help identifying the men in the surveillance photos. Anyone who recognizes them is asked to contact Detective Tony Harris at 503-823-0786 or tony.harris@portlandoregon.gov.

The Packers organization released a statement Friday saying, "The Green Bay Packers were saddened to learn of the senseless attack on Sam Whitehorn last weekend. We have been in touch with Sam's family and have heard from many of their concerned friends, and send the organization's best wishes for a quick and full recovery."

A GoFundMe account for Whitehorn had raised $35,000 by Friday.
