Officers with the Portland Police Bureau have arrested a suspected car thief that rammed two patrol cars with a stolen car.

A North Precinct officer found the parked stolen vehicle just after 8:00 p.m. and tracked the car when the suspect got in it and drove away.

The officer, accompanied by a K-9 unit sergeant, pulled over the car in the parking lot of the Madison Suites Hotel at 3620 Northeast 82nd Avenue.

The suspect then backed into the first officer's car, which hit the officer. The suspect then attempted to drive out of the lot and rammed the K-9 unit's patrol vehicle, hitting so hard that the stolen vehicle's air bags deployed.

The suspect then attempted to escape the scene on foot, but was apprehended after a short search. Officers also found a gun in the stolen vehicle.

Police said the sergeant suffered minor injuries that were treated at the scene.

The suspect has been identified as 24-year-old Justin Joseph Panek. According to Portland Police, he was booked into Multnomah County Jail and charged with assault in the second degree, attempted assault in the second degree, four counts of criminal mischief in the second degree, felon in possession of a firearm, theft in the second degree, theft in the third degree, and DUII.

Peak also had two outstanding warrants.

He received a minor injury and was taken to a local hospital.

The PPB Traffic Division's Major Crash Team and assault detectives helped with the investigation.
