Basketball tournament held for students with special needs

Posted: Updated:

Teams from across Southwest Washington participated in the Unified Basketball League round robin league play at Alki Middle School in Vancouver Saturday.

The Unified Basketball League is a four week program for kids with special needs, and is part of the Special Olympics.

Each team includes students with special needs and partners who are students in their schools’ leadership team.

Games are 20 minutes long, and the teams practice a couple times a week at school.

A special education teacher says the tournament is important for learning about and practicing social interaction.

After the round robin league play, district and state tournaments will follow.
