A family is spending some unexpected time in Colorado after Amy Moore, who was 30 weeks pregnant, went into labor during a flight from Houston to Portland.

"It was gonna be our last trip before our little boy came along," said husband Nathan Moore.

That trip quickly turned into one they will never forget.

"Pretty shortly after takeoff she started having some pain, we thought it was Braxton Hicks contractions," said Nathan.

Their plane was diverted to Denver, and an ambulance met the family at the airport to take them to the hospital.

Now, the Moore Family is spending some time at a Colorado hospital with their one week old preemie baby boy.

Making his debut 10 weeks early, baby Levi required all hands on deck at the hospital.

As a preemie and only 3 pounds, 6 ounces, Levi required round-the-clock care, including a breathing tube and IV nutrition.

"We only got to see him for a few seconds. They took him off really quick when he started to have respiratory distress," Nathan said.

Seven days and counting in the NICU, and little Levi already has his parents wrapped around his little finger.

"He opened his eyes for the first time today. It was absolutely wonderful. I tear up a bit thinking about it," said Nathan.

Now over 1,200 miles away from home, no family nearby, and little more than a carry on full of warm weather clothes from their vacation to Cancun, Nathan and Amy are settled in a makeshift nursery, and relying on the kindness of strangers to help them get through this difficult time.

They may be far from home in Portland, but the Moore’s say their heart is in Colorado.

"We both are taking it as a blessing. Regardless of what happened. We are so happy our baby boy is here," said Nathan.

Nathan says baby Levi is now breathing on his own and mom is doing well.

He anticipates about six more weeks in the NICU in Denver, then hopes to come back home to Portland.

There is a YouCaring page has been set up for the family to cover expenses.
