PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Dozens of students from 28 different schools around the area are gearing up to compete in U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl this Saturday.

The Department of Energy said the student teams will be competing for the chance to represent the Northwest region at the finals of the National Science Bowl this coming April.

According to officials, the winning team will receive and all-expenses-paid trip to Washington D.C. to compete in the finals. The winners of that competition will win prizes for the team members and their schools.

This is the 26th year of the National Science Bowl. The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science said it launched the competition to interest kids in pursuing careers in science and math.

The regional competition will take place Saturday at the University of Portland.
