PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A man who stole a puppy out of a car parked outside a northeast Portland restaurant was sentenced to a year in prison.

James Strode, 47, pleaded guilty to charges of first-degree theft and unlawful entry of a motor vehicle last week.

The investigation began in February 2015.

The dog's owners were having lunch at Boss Hawg's Bar and Grill when the pup named Hercules was stolen.

Surveillance cameras caught the suspect walking into the bar and leaving 20 minutes later. He is then seen walking up to the car with Hercules inside, reaching in to unlock the door and taking the dog.

The man then got into his red convertible with the puppy and drove away.

The following day, a man walked into the Oregon Humane Society office in northeast Portland and dropped off the puppy. Workers said he hurriedly left the building after refusing to give his name.

The suspect was again caught on camera at the Humane Society.

Oregon Humane Society employees linked the abandoned puppy at their office with the stolen puppy story they saw on the news and returned Hercules to his rightful owners.

According to court documents, a Washington state community corrections officer positively identified the suspect in the surveillance videos as Strode. He was indicted in June.

Strode was sentenced last week to 13 months in prison with one year post-prison supervision.
