A Florida man is accused of flying to Portland and sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl he met on Instagram.

Officers, working with Child Abuse Team detectives, arrested 42-year-old Sergio Zambrano at the Motel 6 on the 3100 block of Southeast Powell Boulevard.

Investigators said Zambrano met the girl on Instagram three weeks ago and lied about his age. After encouraging her to send him nude photos of herself and engaging in sexually explicit online chatting, police said Zambrano flew to Portland and spent the weekend with the victim at the motel.

Detectives said the girl told her parents she was spending the weekend at a friend's house.

Once her parents learned she was not with a friend, they contacted her by cell phone. At that point, police said Zambrano took the girl home.

The girl's parents had her transported by ambulance to a Portland hospital and then called police.

Zambrano was booked in the Multnomah County Jail on Monday on charges including first-degree sex abuse, second-degree rape, second-degree sodomy, using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct, encouraging child sex abuse and luring a minor.

Zambrano is scheduled to be arraigned in court Tuesday.

The Portland Police Bureau encourages parents to talk to their children about appropriate activity on social media and the dangers that exist online. Families wanting to learn more information on how to prevent child sexual exploitation are encouraged to visit the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.
