Suspect in Klamath Falls murder in court after weekend chase

COWLITZ COUNTY, WA (KPTV) -

After being on the run for weeks, a murder suspect is finally behind bars in Cowlitz County, but tracking him down wasn't easy.

A just-released dash cam video shows the chase that finally led to the arrest of Matthew Reyes, as well as the arrest of Kareesa Dean, who is accused of participating in a home invasion with Reyes.

The pair made a video appearance in court Monday.

The chase happened after a murder in Klamath Falls at the beginning of January and a home invasion early Sunday morning in Cowlitz County.

Officers said a judge issued a warrant for Reyes after Rick Aston was found dead inside a hotel room in Klamath Falls a few weeks ago.

Then around 3:00 a.m. Sunday, investigators said Reyes kicked in the door of a couple's home near Cougar, Washington. The homeowners, who wished to remain unnamed, recounted the experience to Fox 12 later that day.

“Then I told him to get out of the house, and he come up and smacked me in the mouth, with a gun,” one homeowner said. “And then he started screaming and putting the gun in my face and in my daughter's face and saying, ‘Keys, keys, give me the keys!’”

The victims said Reyes and Dean walked out of the house with the keys and the woman's purse, then sped away in her daughter's car, after which the couple called 911.

Cowlitz County deputies figured out that car had been abandoned, and that a nearby red Nissan was missing.

They then caught up with the second car, and that was when the chase began.

The dash cam video shows sparks flying as the car tries to outrun police. After several minutes, the officer does what's called a PIT maneuver and hits the back left corner of the car.

The video then shows the officer hit the back right corner of the car, spinning it around, before the officer runs out of the car and arrests the two wanted individuals.

Both suspects face charges of at robbery and assault, and Reyes is also facing that murder charge in Klamath County.
