Heavy rains caused landslide that disturbed grave at Ilwaco Cemetery

ILWACO, WA (KPTV) -

A landslide disturbed a gravesite and took out a road at the Ilwaco Cemetery.

State geologists visited the cemetery Monday morning and determined heavy rain caused the hillside to give out last week.

They determined the hillside is still not stable.

The Ilwaco Cemetery Association, a non-profit organization consisting of volunteers, oversees the cemetery.

The landslide likely occurred Thursday, according to a board member.

Volunteers recovered the casket exposed during the landslide and plan to inter it at another location.

The headstone and casket at another gravesite located near the edge of the slide will be relocated. Family members of the woman buried there say her headstone was put in place the day before the slide occurred.

A board member said they’re considering seeking FEMA funds to address the slide because insurance will not cover the landslide damage.

The slide area is taped off and the gate to the cemetery is locked, so only foot access is allowed.
