Portland voters will see a gas tax on May ballot

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland voters will decide in May whether to implement a temporary gas tax.

Commissioner Steve Novick outlined his tax proposal for the city council Wednesday, and they voted to put it on the May 2016 ballot.

If the measure is approved by voters, a temporary 10 cent per gallon tax would fund street repairs, signals, more crosswalks and other safety features.

The tax would no longer be in effect after four years.

As of Wednesday, the average gallon of gas in Portland cost $2.10, according to GasBuddy.com, with the average for all of Oregon slightly lower at $2.06.

Gas prices are a little higher in Washington, where drivers are paying $2.20 per gallon.
