PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

One of the militia members now in federal custody is 43-year-old Ryan Bundy. But long before this case, a Portland man knew him in a much different light.

Ryan Bundy grew up as a very active member of the Mormon Church, and a local attorney who did mission work with him can't believe that Bundy is now a suspect in a federal case.

Chris Campbell hasn't spoken to Bundy for several years. The two met at the Mormon Missionary Training Center in Utah in 1991 and then they traveled to Colorado to perform their missionary work.

Campbell remembers Bundy as a kind, giving and fun person. But in the last decade, he and his ranching family started protesting federal land use laws.

In 2014, his father, Cliven Bundy staged an epic fight with BLM over unpaid grazing fees.

Campbell say seeing Bundy at the armed occupation in Burns and now in federal court is not something he would've ever expected from him.

"I know that Ryan's political views and mine are pretty much black and white, and we have different life views. But the Ryan I know, at least back then, he's no extremist fundamentalist. He's a normal, good guy with a very large heart, that would give the shirt off his back to anyone."

Ryan Bundy is the oldest of 14 children.

Ryan and his brother Ammon are now being held in the Multnomah County Jail without bail.
