Local group heads to Peru for special medical mission

Posted: Updated:

A special group of local doctors and nurses are on their way to South America for a special mission.

It was an early morning Thursday for the FACES Foundation group at PDX, where they boarded their flight for Peru. The group, which is made up of 32 administrative and medical professionals, are making their ninth trip to the country.

They call it a "surgical campaign," where they work with local hospital staff in Peru to provide surgeries on poverty-stricken and medically-isolated families. Their focus is primarily children with cleft lips and cleft palates – and it is all for free.

"The idea is to get community support to find these children, but also to follow them," said Dr. Thomas Albert, a FACES Foundation team member. "It's really important that we go back."

Plastic surgeon Dr. Dane Barrett told Fox 12, "The organization has done a really good job partnering with local doctors to really just provide these patients with a standard of care they would otherwise not receive."

The group will be in Peru for 10 days to perform surgery and some follow-up care. Some say this is the best thing they have ever done.

Barrett also has a special surprise for some of the kids he will be meeting. He is bringing some soccer balls with him to help spread the Major League Soccer love.
