A burglary suspect was arrested Friday after items, including a receipt, were left behind in the hotel room he stole items from.

Newport Police Officers responded to the Newport Roadway Inn at around 5:30 p.m. Thursday on the report of a burglary and theft.

The victims said they had left their room for a day. When they returned, the victims realized someone had gone into their room and taken their things.

Investigators discovered whoever entered the room left items behind, including a store receipt.

According to Newport Police, they were able to use the receipt to get video footage of the suspect.

Police said the suspect was then identified as Zachary H. Smith, 30, of Toledo.

Officers later learned that Smith had taken some of the stolen items to pawn at a local business.

According to police, the business refused to buy the stolen items from Smith, who then became angry and broke them.

Police said when Smith was found, he was still in possession of the stolen items, and admitted to the theft.

He is now in custody at the Lincoln County Jail and charged with burglary in the first degree, theft in the second degree, attempted theft in the first degree, and criminal mischief in the second degree.
