Child raises more than $1,000 for Homeless Connect

Posted: Updated:

The housing crisis and homelessness are big problems in our area, and 6-year-old Parker Steelman is doing what he can to help.

"It makes me feel really happy because when they're all homeless, it made me feel kinda sad, but now I'm way happier," said Parker.

Parker is now “Way happier” after lending a hand at a Project Homeless Connect event on Friday.

Local families in need gathered at a Hillsboro church, receiving everything from hamburgers, to hair cuts, to eye exams.

This is the second time Parker took part.

He has raised a total of more than $1,000 dollars, so he does not come empty handed.

Parker’s dad says it all started while he was running errands with is mom.

They drove past a man with a sign asking for money, and she explained why he was homeless.

By the time they returned, the man was gone, but Parker’s resolve was not.

His parents said he would not let it go, and suggested they hold a fundraiser for the homeless.

They helped him set up a GoFundMe account and collected hundreds of dollars from friends, family, and random people.

The goal of Project Homeless Connect is to bring communities together, to find tangible solutions to homelessness.

Parker’s dad says he feels blessed that there is an organization like this, and an opportunity to give back.
