Senators Wyden and Merkley reflect on the cost of the Oregon standoff

Posted: Updated:

Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley said the standoff at the Malheur Wildlife Refuge has already cost too much with the loss of life, and more than one million dollars in resources.

"We are saddened that there was a loss of life along the way, but it is so important to this community that this occupation end, and we compliment the local law enforcement for working so well with the FBI towards that end,” said Senator Merkley.

"Obviously the costs here have been tremendous on a small community, so we're going to do everything we can to try and help them deal with those costs," Senator Wyden said.

The standoff is estimated to have cost Harney County about $50,000 per day, putting the overall cost at about $1.4 million.

Wyden and Merkley said they are already asking for the state’s help, and will look into getting some federal help as well.
