Friends and family gathered at the Portland State University Campus Sunday to celebrate the life of 20-year-old AJ Schlatter.

Schlatter passed away earlier this month following complications from minor throat surgery.

Schlatter was a readshirt freshman linebacker for the PSU Vikings.

He started 10 games during the 2015 season, and was named Big Sky Conference defensive player of the week following a win over Eastern Washington on November 21.

AJ is described by friends and family as a selfless, positive, person and hope to keep his legacy alive.

"He always had a smile on his face. He was always positive and always wanted what was best for everyone else. Never really worried about himself, just a winner attitude and just honored to be his teammate and call him a friend really," said Stevie Coury.

A memorial fund has been set up in his honor to help provide scholarships at Portland State.
