COWLITZ COUNTY, WA (KPTV) -

Cowlitz County officials are investigating why some homeowners are recently seeing abnormally high utility bills.

Several people reported to seeing spikes in their utility bills from the Cowlitz County Public Utility District, some seeing more than double their normal amount.

Some owners said they took precautions to help keep their energy bills low this winter.

“I’ve particularly paid attention this year and tried to make some changes and do some insulation and do some different things to help, knowing that winter was coming on,” said homeowner Rick Shaw.

Homeowner Angie Dombrosky said she expected small spikes in her utility bill during cold periods but her most recent bill shows an excessive increase.

The Cowlitz County Public Utility District said in a statement, “we recognize our customers’ concerns about higher bills. It’s not uncommon to hear about increased bills in the winter months.

The company said they will be looking into their billing and meter reading procedures.
