Downtown on-street parking rates increase to $2 an hour

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Those wishing to park on the streets in downtown Portland will now need to shell out a little extra money into the meters.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation announced they will be increasing the on-street parking rates to $2 an hour Monday.

This is the first change to on-street meter rates since 2009.

PBOT said the goal of the increased rates was to ensure that spaces are available so drivers do not have to circle the block a few times to find a space.

Officials said excessive circling can be a big problem for traffic as well as the environment.

PBOT said up to 95 percent of the parking spaces downtown were being filled.  With the new rate increase, PBOT’s goal is to have less than 85 percent of spaces occupied during the day.

Rates for PBOT’s six SmartPark garages will not be affected by the new meter rates.
