OAK GROVE, OR (KPTV) -

Deputies have identified the 19-year-old man who died in an officer-involved shooting during a SWAT standoff at an Oak Grove apartment complex.

Deputies responded to the 3700 block of Southeast Concord Road at 7:35 a.m. Thursday on a report of a man armed with a rifle threatening members of his family.

Investigators said they soon determined the man, identified as Christopher Kalonji, was in a mental health crisis.

Members of the Behavioral Health Unit and police negotiators responded to the scene. Initial communication with the suspect went on for more than two hours.

During that time, the Clackamas County Interagency Special Weapons and Tactics Team arrived and took over the scene.

Deputies spent several hours attempting to get the suspect to surrender, including using tear gas and an explosive charge on the door.

Investigators said Kalonji eventually brandished the rifle, resulting in deputies firing at him. Kalonji retreated into the apartment and barricaded himself in one of the rooms.

At 3:45 p.m., deputies were able to enter the home and take the man into custody.

Kalonji was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds and later pronounced dead.

An autopsy was conducted Friday, but results have not yet been released.

Police identified the suspect Monday as Kalonji. The release of his name was delayed so that family members living outside the U.S. could be notified.

The deputies involved in the shooting are now on paid administrative leave, which is standard practice following an officer-involved shooting.

The Clackamas Major Crimes Team investigation into the incident is expected to last several weeks.
